Description
These plates can be used to construct lamellar armor for Sport Combat, Cosplay, and LARP. This steel version of these plates will make heavy-duty combat grade armor for blunted-steel weapon combat. Dagohir and Amtgard padded-weapon combat prefers the use of steel for aesthetics and weight penalties. The hardened aluminum version of these plates are acceptable and well suited for SCA Rattan Combat.
The “D” plate is loosely based on the more than thirty lamellae (individual plates for lamellar armor) found in Birka, Sweden, in 1877, 1934 and 1998-2000. They were dated to the same approximate period as the Gjermundbu mailshirt (900-950) and may be evidence that some Vikings wore this armor. There is debate whether the lamellae in question were in the possession of a Scandinavian resident or a foreign mercenary. Since Norsemen were employed by the Byzantines as Varangian guard mercenaries, both assertions have potential.
